{new} orleans
in new orleans for the day, getting my passport renewed.
these pictures are from cafe du monde, and they're a perfect example of my perspective. the first is of a pile of beignets--which is why every tourist in the city is crammed onto this tiny patio.here's the difference between what they see and what i see. they sit down and anxiously await the arrival of three pockets of overrated dough with sugared ignorance on top. while i wait, i notice the dispirited server, and feel the sluggish heartbeat of this city. as overweight and overjoyed tourists wash down their third beignet with cheerful satisfaction, i see a weary and malnourished homeless man rise from some state of unconsciousness. i see the shadows of this city. their painful taste overwhelms the sweet of this powdered donut.
